Description

The Neutron Transmutation Doping (NTD) of Silicon (Si) was the industrial application at FRM II reactor in the last years. Nowadays, concerning the boom of electro mobility, green energy, ambitious political targets toward the decarbonized-world, it becomes even more society-relevant. Nonetheless, of its huge importance both for the FRM II facility, but also to the entire society, generally it is seldom discussed and detailed presented. Most probably, this was caused by the fact, that after establishing it as a commercial industrial application, the main actors to that time, were not keen to share some sensitive technological details to potential competitors. So that, there were no international scientific conferences on this subject hold any more since middle of 90-th. Despite the official IAEA recommendations to widely implement NTD as one of the most promising industrial applications for the research reactors, currently only a hand full facilities worldwide successfully operates in this field and provide the industry with NTD Si. Among them FRM II is one of the places where this technology has been very successfully developed and implemented. In my presentation I will give an overview to the silicon NTD process, it technological realization at FRM II and describe trends and perspectives in this field, underlying its global impact.
