DESCRIPTION:Speakers: Christian Reiter\n\nThe Forschungs-Neutronenquelle H
einz Maier-Leibnitz (FRM II)\, operated by the Technical University of Mun
ich (TUM)\, is a high-flux research reactor that currently uses high-enric
hed uranium (HEU) fuel. In line with international nuclear nonproliferatio
n goals\, a major initiative is underway to convert the reactor to low-enr
iched uranium (LEU) fuel while preserving its unique performance character
istics. This ambitious transition requires a solid scientific and engineer
ing foundation\, particularly in the area of thermal hydraulics. This semin
ar will present TUM's thermal-hydraulics research program supporting the F
RM II conversion. The seminar will cover recent experimental campaigns aim
ed at characterizing flow behavior\, heat transfer\, and critical safety p
arameters in representative FRM II core geometries. The design and commiss
ioning of specialized test facilities\, the challenges of scaling and inst
rumentation\, and the use of experimental data to validate system codes an
d guide LEU core design will be discussed. The talk will particularly highl
ight how thermal-hydraulic results contribute to safety analyses\, licensi
ng strategies\, and demonstrating performance parity between the HEU and p
roposed LEU cores. These efforts are a key part of TUM’s commitment to s
afely converting reactors based on science and creating sustainable resear
 ch infrastructure.\n\nhttps://indico.frm2.tum.de/event/585/
