Fusion Neutrons for Science and Industry: Opportunities and Challenges
by
Neutrons are important tools for scientific research and industrial applications, ranging from materials characterization and irradiation studies to the development of nuclear fission and fusion technologies. Depending on the application, different neutron energies, intensities, and temporal characteristics are required. I will provide a brief overview of selected neutron applications and existing neutron sources. Against this background, I will explore the potential of laser-driven fusion neutron sources, focusing on an approach currently being investigated at Marvel Fusion. I will introduce the underlying physical concepts and discuss possible advantages for selected applications. The presentation will also address the availability of relevant industrial laser technologies and some of the scientific and engineering challenges associated with developing practical fusion neutron sources.
