Description

Neutron scattering methods offer a powerful means of probing structural and chemical changes within battery materials during operation. Owing to their sensitivity to light elements such as lithium and hydrogen, and their high penetration depth through metallic casings, neutron diffraction and imaging enable in situ and operando investigation of phase transformations, ion transport, and degradation processes inaccessible to conventional X-ray techniques. This talk presents an overview of such applications across lithium-ion battery systems, with emphasis on the correlation between structural and morphological evolution and electrochemical performance. Recent instrumental developments and prospects for future neutron-based battery diagnostics are also discussed.
